HISTORY
The Tourism and Hotel Management program is one of the most established programs at Balıkesir Vocational School, founded in 1976. Over the years, the program has developed rapidly, and today, it continues its education and training activities with a faculty of three. All of our faculty members possess both industry and academic experience. This characteristic ensures that our program provides education at international standards and is quite competitive among associate degree institutions offering tourism education. To date, our program has trained thousands of qualified mid-level management graduates for the tourism sector. Among our graduates, many former students have reached the highest levels in the sector, including hotel owners, agency owners, general managers, food and beverage managers, and so on.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES/EMPLOYMENT AREAS
Graduates from the department are employed in accommodation, food and beverage, airline, and other transportation businesses. They are also available for work at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, convention centers, tourism information offices, and other service businesses.
Graduates of the department have no difficulty finding employment. Summer internships are extremely beneficial in preparing students for the professional world.
DEGREE EARNED
Students who complete this program receive an Associate Degree in Tourism and Hotel Management.
ADMITTANCE AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
Students are admitted to the Balıkesir University Tourism and Hotel Management Program through a centralized exam administered by the Assessment, Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Students are admitted to the department based on the TYT score and offer a two-year associate degree program.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS AND RULES
To graduate from the Tourism and Hotel Management program, a student must have a minimum GPA (transcript) of 2.00 out of 4.00, pass the required courses in the curriculum, be successful in other required studies, complete a total of 120 ECTS credits, and have been approved for graduation by the relevant board of directors.
EXAMS, ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION
Every student must register for classes at the beginning of the semester and attend at least 70% of the classes to be eligible for the final exam. Students will take at least one midterm exam (midterm) and one final exam (final) for each course. All exams are graded out of 100, with the midterm accounting for 40% and the final exam accounting for 60%. A minimum score of 50 points on the final exam, with an average of 45, is required. The final grade is converted to letter grades according to the table. Students who receive a letter grade of AA, BA, BB, CB, or CC in a course are considered successful. DC and DD grades are conditional passing grades. Courses that receive a letter grade of FF and are considered failed are repeated in the first semester they are offered.
ASSOCIATE DEGREE PROGRAMS WHERE INTER-DEPARTURE TRANSFER IS AVAILABLE
The procedures and principles to be followed for horizontal transfers between diploma programs within Balıkesir Vocational School or to equivalent diploma programs at other higher education institutions are regulated in the "Balıkesir University Directive on Internal and Inter-Institutional Horizontal Transfers" (https://kms.kaysis.gov.tr/Home/Goster/61834).
Students wishing to transfer using the central placement base score (Additional Article-1) must have a central placement score (YKS) in the year of registration equal to or higher than the base score of the programs to which they wish to transfer at our university. Furthermore, they must not have previously exercised this right. The procedures and principles governing these procedures are outlined on the relevant website.
UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS WHERE VERTICAL TRANSFER IS AVAILABLE FROM THE DEPARTMENT
Continuing undergraduate education graduates who wish to apply have the opportunity to transfer to four-year undergraduate programs at universities, depending on their scores on the Vertical Transfer Exam (DGS) administered by the Student Selection and Placement Center and their quota availability.
Graduates of the Tourism and Hotel Management Program can transfer to the following departments within the formal education system: Business Administration, Business Informatics, Business Administration, Business Economics, Accommodation Management, Accommodation and Tourism Management, Tourism Management, Tourism Management, and Hotel Management.
In addition, vertical transfer is possible to the open education programs of Atatürk, Anadolu, and Istanbul Universities: Labor Economics and Industrial Relations, International Relations, Finance, Public Relations and Advertising, Economics, Public Administration, Public Relations and Promotion, Accommodation Management, Business Administration, Aviation Management, and Tourism.
